I was curious after reading an article in The Korea Times today. According to the article, 44% of Korean students at top American universities drop out. The study tracked 1,400 Korean students from 14 American universities between 1985-2007. Normally, about 1/3 of American students do not finish college, because of hardships, financial reasons, difficulties, etc. However, I'm surprised that the dropout rate for Korean students is higher.
The smallest class I ever taught at HUFS was 7. The class started with 15, but by the end of the semester only 7 students remained.
This may sound perverse but in order for people to succeed, others must fail. If everyone in the world had a college degree, would it still be valuable? Like everyone else, I can tie my shoes by myself, but no one has ever congratulated me or paid me for it.
Why do you think 44% of students are giving up?

I was also really surprised when I saw this news. I feel sorry for them, because they would have studied hard and spent lots of time and money to get into the university in the U.S. Even though I'm just an ESL student here, I'm having a hard time to deal with lots of homework every night. I think American students study a lot more than Korean university students, and it can be one of the reasons that korean students have a high rate of dropout. Moreover, thesedays students seem to give up more easily than the past if they feel it's difficult. Do you agree with me?
Hello. Andy.
I'm YeJi. I was part of 3A class. Do you remember me? Anyway, I often read your writings. I always look forward to reading your posts. These are useful for me. Thank you =)
Take care~~~ hehehe
Hi Emily. I hope you're enjoying your stay in the U.S. I've never been a student in Korea, so I can't really say. Based on my limited knowledge, it seems possible to "cram" for exams at Korean universities. This is not possible in the U.S., since research papers and homework make up the majority of your grades.
Hi Yeji. Yes. I remember you. Thanks for reading. I hope my writing doesn't bore you.
